As far back as she can remember, Mary Jo was always happiest with a crayon, pencil or paintbrush in her hand.

At the tender age of about 6, she remembers begging her Grandpa to surrender his paintbrush to her and allow her to help him paint the screens, which were so neatly spread on the ground in her back yard. He was a stubborn man, but he finally relented.

She remembers the fragrance and vibrant colors of the flowers grown in their tiny garden in the Bronx and the artful displays her grandma arranged in a simple vase or pitcher.

Mary Jo Libertino was born in New York City. She attended NYC public schools, including Hunter College of the City of New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Design and Elementary Education.

She taught in elementary schools in NYC, Virginia, New York State and Massachusetts. She also taught Art History at the Boston College Institute of Learning in Retirement for 12 years.

Mary Jo has been painting for 23 years and realizes that each painting is a lesson – the failures as important as the successes.

It’s the successes though that yield the greatest joy – and that comes when she is satisfied and happy with her results.
